Common Dog Behavioral Issues
Barking
A nuisance behavior that usually originates from stress that can be caused by a variety of reasons including being afraid (or oppositely not afraid) of something, surprised/startled, or unable to control certain energy level.
Pulling on Leash
Lack of communication and understanding of what the equipment means. The dog cares more about other things than the owner/handler. Unable to control excitement levels from new smells, sights and/or sounds.
Biting
Happens for many reasons but none of them are excusable and often escalate to more serious situations later on. Could be a sign of aggression depending on how the biting is being done. Play-biting is also not acceptable.
Jumping
Inability for the dog to integrate into the current environment. Dog’s excitement level is uncontrollable and chooses to relieve energy by leaping onto people. People react positively to this just reinforcing the behavior.
Food Guarding
The dog possesses an insecurity and is unable to cope with another animal or human being involved during their consumption of food. The possibility of their food being taken by someone else causes stress. Dog may growl or show teeth.
Humping
Dog is misunderstanding (and likely has never been shown) the relationship and expected interaction he should have with other dogs or objects. Humping or mounting is not a playful activity and can cause dog fights.
Chewing
Another stress related behavior that the dog exhibits because they are unable to cope. That stress and energy is relieved by chewing or destroying other objects. Can also take other forms such as digging or clawing.
Elimination in House
We don’t consider a dog potty trained until they are able to go on command. In many cases, the dog learns to hold until the fear of being punished (e.g. owner is not around) is gone and then dog may choose to eliminate in house.
Grooming Difficulty
Lack of trust where the dog does not understand (and was never properly taught) how to act in uncomfortable situations such as grooming. Same thing is noticed in other scenarios such as Vet visits. Slow desensitization can help resolve.
Separation Anxiety
Due to dog’s inability to be away from the handler originates from not being able to deal with stress. The biggest cause of this is owners greeting their dog with a ton of energy or making it very obvious when leaving.
Untrained vs. Trained
Everyone’s idea of a “trained” dog tends to be different. In most cases, people have no clue what these amazing animals are capable of, no matter what age, size or breed. Below is a video outlining a basic example of what we consider to be an untrained dog compared to a dog that went through our program.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely not! We decided to use a puppy during the filming of this program because of two main reasons. 1) We wanted to squash any assumption that the dog in the training program was already pre-trained! Too many training programs out there use adult dogs that already have some form of training. 2) Puppies have a lot of energy, are easily distracted and make tons of mistakes. This program is meant to teach and there’s no better way to demonstrate than using a crazy, hyper, curious puppy so you can see what true training progression and understanding looks like.
Yes! All questions are viewed by Jimi himself. It’s important to remember that this is not a large commercial operation. The program is currently run by Jimi and one other staff member. For very complex or challenging training scenarios, it’s not uncommon for Jimi to set up a phone or Facetime/Skype session to communicate directly with students and their dog in real time.
We aim to respond within 24 hours of your question being submitted. Depending on the question, the response can take up to 72 hours but this is rare. In many cases, we respond within a few hours.
You’re right. Owning a dog (or any animal for that matter) is a big responsibility and you should expect that a lot of your time will be consumed by having to care for your dog. Dog training can take up a lot of time; however, our program focuses on making the training experience fun for both the owner and the dog. We believe in short 10-15 minute training sessions throughout the day rather than long grueling sessions. Besides, training your dog properly will pay off dividends for the rest of your life (and your dog’s too) by providing a stronger relationship and bond with your dog with the ability to take your well-trained companion almost everywhere you go!
Just as it’s stated, if you purchase our program and within the first 60 days realize that this program isn’t for you, let us know and we’ll provide a full refund within 24 hours! At some point we may define some restrictions around this, but to-date we have only had 1 refund request which was from a student that never logged into the program after purchase.
You’re in luck! We’ve actually found that the less students have been exposed to other forms of dog training, the more success they seem to have with our program. In this age of social media where everyone seems to be a “professional” dog training after attending a 2-week seminar, there’s an exorbitant amount of dangerous and wrong information out there. The more that you can filter our and ignore outside information, the better.
Aggression is a tricky and dangerous area and really should be evaluated by a professional in person. In some cases, aggression can even be caused by underlying health issues that only a Veterinarian can identify through scans or blood work. If your dog is showing clear signs of aggression (lunging, biting, showing teeth) towards any other person or animal, then it needs to be handled with extreme caution. Again, please contact us or a local professional that can identify where your dog’s aggression is stemming from and put together a safe plan to resolve it.
No! Although genetics do play a role, all dogs are capable of making behavioral improvements. Jimi has trained thousands of dogs over the last 30 years and has never given up on any dog. Animal training is challenging but that’s also what makes it fun and rewarding! Our training methodology can be applied to any breed of dog at any age, it just takes patience and consistently while following the steps that we provide.
To get started, you’ll need a standard leather collar, 6ft leash and a properly sized plastic crate. That’s it! Our program doesn’t involve trying to sell you on expensive or proprietary equipment. As you progress further into the training, we do make suggestions on additional equipment that can help aide you, but that’s many months later. We encourage our students to be thrifty and save money by purchasing products from online retailers and even second-hand items off Craigslist or eBay when the cost-savings makes sense.
We believe that Prong and Choke collars should not be used by anyone! If we don’t find them necessary to use when rehabilitating severely aggressive and dangerous dogs, then we don’t see a reason for a pet owner to use one. Remember, there is no quick fix in dog training! On the other hand… modern day, professional-grade electronic collars can be a helpful training tool. However, this is ONLY when 1) you know what you’re doing and 2) you introduce it after a strong training foundation has already been laid. We do make use of e-collars towards the end of this program for off-leash training. Students have the option of skipping those lessons if or use an e-collar with vibration function instead.
At this time, we do not currently offer an educational or student discount mainly due to the fact that this program involves spending a lot of one-on-one attention with our students. However, 10% of all proceeds do get placed into a fund that we use on a yearly basis to help provide Service Dog Training to Veterans in needs.
The Back Story
This is Beau. He’s now a 3 year old Vizsla and the canine star of this online dog training program. Funny enough, the whole idea for this training program was not even Jimi’s! A few years ago, an acquaintance (that Jimi met at a mutual friend’s wedding reception) reached out about helping him find a new puppy. This person expressed interest in wanting to train his dog himself and asked if it was possible for Jimi to teach him how. They met every 1-2 weeks and each training lesson was recorded so that Beau’s owner could then watch (and re-watch) each lesson and practice the training at home. The progression was astonishing and after only about 9-10 months, Beau turned out to be an incredible dog with an amazing personality and impressive obedience level. After a 2 year process of getting this website and training program created, we’re now ready to share the best dog training program with the world!
Proven Results
Remember that great video at the top of this page with Kostas and Kathryn from Virginia and their dog, Roxy? Well, here’s the first video we shot the day after meeting Roxy in person! This is a dog we had never met before and had only communicated with the owners through this online training program. Kostas and Kathryn followed our program to an absolute “T” and we were in constant communication with them throughout the process. As training progressed and they began to grasp our training methodology, we communicated over the phone and Kostas submitted videos of Roxy’s remaining problem areas so that Jimi could pinpoint issues and suggest exact corrections. They were so impressed that they sent Roxy directly to Jimi from across the country so that he could begin training her at an even higher level. We are seeing other students having the exact same success as they did and couldn’t be happier!
